An hour north-east of Rome lies the region of Umbria; rolling hills topped with evergreen oak forests, olive groves, vineyards, snow-capped mountains and medieval hilltop villages all describe this stunning, ancient territory. Pliny the Elder, writing in the 1st century AD, states that the Umbri, the ancient people who lived this land, were the oldest people known to live in Italy. Many of the centers founded by them still exist today, having been romanized in the 2nd century BC.
